Image shows Lake Balaton and its surroundings. Located in the Transdanubia region,
Western Hungary, the Balaton is the largest freshwater lake in central Europe.
It stretches along the southern foothills of the
Bakony Mountains and represents an important
recreational and fishing
resource, although it is severely polluted.
On the lake's north shore, the conservation reserve
and national park of Tihanyl-felsziget.
Fine vineyards grow all along the other parts of the
lake shore and complete the landscape of the region,
characterised by rolling hills with highly fertile soil.
