About Earth Watching...

Using satellite remote sensing technology to help people: monitoring emergencies as they happen, keeping track of a flood, alerting coastguards to pollutants in the water, detecting burning fires or assisting authorities in rebuilding after disasters or helping archaeologists with their searches, Earth Watching is lending a hand to those who need it most.
ESA/ESRIN and Eurimage started the Earth Watching project in 1993 for two main reasons: to supply satellite data and pertinent information quickly in cases of natural disasters; and to demonstrate the benefits of remote sensing applications during emergencies, through images and articles. The Earth Watching project aims at stimulating awareness of the potential of remote sensing. From June 1999 the project is supported by ESA/ESRIN directly to provide awareness of the planning activities of the ESA's supported satellite missions and to show information quickly in case of special events.

From time to time, the Earth Watching team presents satellite data from different corners of the world which are not disaster areas, but images with the objective of showing how satellite remote sensing can reveal particular Earth features. Other images could be linked to some special event such as a conference, a symposium or a TV show (Linea Verde is a program of the Italian TV broadcasting company - RAI - on the environment).

These pages contain information regarding natural events collected by the EarthWatching team as a result of user requests or self-activation. The information includes the availability of high resolution remote sensing data from the LANDSAT 5 and 7, ERS-2 and ENVISAT satellites over the area and for the time of interest. Where possible, ERS-2 and ENVISAT data acquisitions are also planned (even if the DESCW plots show dashed lines for "visible" frames, planning has been requested and if possible implemented). Some of the events and data processing after acquisition are further handled by the EarthWatching team. The results then appear on the "Latest Event" or other events' pages.
